Tire Pressure Calculator

The right pressure is a balance of rolling resistance, comfort and control — and it depends on how much you weigh, how wide your tires are, and what you're riding on. Enter your setup for a starting point.

Your setup

Typical road bike ~9–11 kg, plus bags/water.

Recommended pressure

Front
–
PSI
Rear
–
PSI

The rear runs ~10% higher than the front because it carries more of your weight. Treat these as a starting point: if the tire squirms or you pinch-flat, add a few PSI; if it feels harsh or slides on rough ground, drop a few PSI.

How this is calculated

A transparent model in the spirit of SILCA's pro calculator. Wider tires run lower; more weight runs higher; rougher surfaces run higher for control and puncture protection. The rear is set above the front to match its greater load.

  1. Base pressure from tire width (narrower = higher).
  2. Weight adjustment: ~+5 PSI per 10 kg above an 80 kg system (and vice-versa).
  3. Surface adjustment: +10 PSI rough road, +20 PSI gravel, +30 PSI MTB.
  4. Wheel adjustment: +3 PSI for 650b / 27.5" (smaller wheels like a touch more pressure).
  5. Front = 95% of total, Rear = 110% of total.

References

This tool uses a simplified, transparent version of the approach popularised by SILCA and widely used by pro mechanics.

  1. SILCA — "Pro Tire Pressure Calculator" — the professional reference for rider weight, tire width, surface and wheel-size based pressure.
  2. Tritirera — tire pressure & comfort calculators — independent pressure guidance by weight and tire volume.

No calculator replaces feel. Check pressure cold, re-check after big weight changes or new tires, and remember that lower pressure is safer than too-high on rough ground (too-high risks pinch flats and loss of control).
